ISO 9001 can be described as an international standard that defines the requirements for implementing the quality management system (QMS). It is the most frequently utilized standard within ISO 9000 and can be accredited by companies.

ISO 9001 was first published by the International Organization for Standardization, an international organization comprised of national standard organizations that span over 160 nations. The most current version of ISO 9001 has been released in September 2015.

ISO 9001, which is built on the plan-do-check–act method, provides a process-oriented approach for documenting, reviewing, and approving the procedure, structure, responsibilities, and processes required for effective quality management within an organization. Whether you are starting your ISO 9001 journey or transitioning to the 2015 revision the first step should be to buy an ISO 9001:2015 version.

All organizations currently registered to ISO 9001/2008 must have changed to ISO 9001/2008 by September 14, 2018.

ISO 9001: Versions before this one
The original version was published in 1987. ISO 9001 went through revisions between the years 1994 and 2000. The latest revision was published in September of 2015.

ISO 9001:1994 contained changes to improve control over the development and design clauses, and also provide additional clarifications. The role of ISO 9002 was slightly altered by the series of 1994.
The ISO 9001 :2008 revision sought clarification on issues that were raised during application ISO 9001 :2000.
